If you want to create a new training program that shares many similarities with one of your existing programs, the fastest and easiest method is to clone the existing program using FlightLogger’s built-in cloning function.
This allows you to make a full copy of an existing program – including lessons, exercises, program requirements, and settings – so that you only need to make a few adjustments before the new program is ready to use.
This video explains the process of cloning an existing training program.
In case you don't have a similar program to clone, you will instead need to create a new training program from scratch. You can learn about that in this article.
When should I use the clone feature?
Use the clone function if:
-
The new program is very similar to an existing one
-
You only need to adjust details like names, times, or individual exercises
-
You want to save time instead of building a new program structure from scratch
💡 Example: If you already have a Boeing 737 Type Rating program and want to create a similar Boeing 747 version, cloning the 737 program gives you a quick starting point.
If you do not have an existing program to use as a starting point, you’ll need to create your program manually instead.

How to clone a program
Follow these steps to create a new program based on an existing one:
1. Go to the Programs page
-
Navigate to Administration → Programs
-
Here you’ll see a list of all your current training programs
2. Find the program you want to clone
-
Locate the program that will serve as the basis for the new one
-
Click the yellow clone icon to the right
Important:
The clone will be based on the currently active revision of the program.
If your program has multiple revisions, make sure the correct one is set as active before you start cloning.
3. Let FlightLogger create the clone
-
FlightLogger will now generate a 1:1 copy of the program
-
Depending on the size of the program, this can take a few minutes
-
The new program will be named "[Original Program Name] clone" by default
You can now rename it – for example, from Boeing 737 clone to Boeing 747 Type Rating.
What gets copied in the clone?
The following data is included in the cloned program:
-
All lessons and exercises
-
Phases and their order
-
Briefing texts and syllabus times
-
Certificate requirements
-
Flight time limitation settings (if enabled on your account)
-
Master exercise list (as referenced by the copied lessons)
Make your changes
The cloned program will not have any students attached yet, which means:
-
You can safely make major changes (e.g., delete/add lessons or phases)
-
You can also make minor changes (e.g., rename, update times, modify exercises)
Once your edits are complete, the program is ready for use.
Tip: Cloning a program preserves the original version, so you can experiment freely in the new copy without affecting existing training records.
Final steps
When you're happy with the updated structure:
-
You can begin attaching students to the new program
-
The new program will become active as soon as students are added
That’s it – you’ve now created a new training program using the cloning feature.
Want to start from scratch?
If you don’t have a similar program to copy from, you can build your program manually.
