Overview
This article explains the widgets available under the CBTA (Competency-Based Training and Assessment) category in FlightLogger’s Business Insights module. These widgets visualize competency performance data across programs, instructors, and flight phases – supporting continuous evaluation of pilot development.
All widgets in this category require that CBTA is enabled on at least one training program in your account.

CBTA matrix
What it shows:
A matrix view of all core CBTA competencies scored across flight phases within a selected CBTA-enabled training program.
When to use it:
Use this widget to get a full overview of how competencies are being trained and evaluated across different phases of flight. It highlights which competencies are consistently assessed and where potential training gaps exist.
Example use:
See how “Application of Procedures” and “Situation Awareness” are scored during takeoff and approach phases.
CBTA matrix (filtered by user)
What it shows:
Same as above, but filtered for one specific instructor or pilot.
When to use it:
Use this to assess the scoring behavior or coverage of a single instructor, or to follow a student’s competency profile over time.
Example use:
Review how CPT JAC scores “Leadership and Teamwork” across multiple flight phases.
Competency performance
What it shows:
Average scoring trends across each core CBTA competency (e.g. Communication, Decision Making, Flight Path Management).
When to use it:
Use this widget to understand how well specific competencies are being demonstrated across the training program.
Example use:
Track whether “Problem Solving and Decision Making” consistently meets performance expectations.
Competency performance (filtered by user)
What it shows:
Same as above, filtered by instructor or student.
When to use it:
Helps instructors and heads of training assess how one person performs or evaluates specific competencies.
Example use:
Review how CPT JAC scores or is scored on “Workload Management”.
Flight phase performance
What it shows:
Average performance scores per flight phase (Ground, Takeoff, Climb, Approach, Landing).
When to use it:
Use this to identify whether certain flight phases consistently show lower performance levels across students or groups.
Example use:
Spot if trainees underperform during Approach compared to other phases.
Flight phase performance (filtered by user)
What it shows:
Same as above, filtered for a specific user.
When to use it:
Ideal for reviewing one student’s phase-by-phase development or analyzing an instructor’s grading patterns.
Example use:
Track CPT JAC’s student performance during Climb and Landing phases.
Flight phase radar
What it shows:
A radar (spider) chart showing phase performance across competencies – visualized in a circular layout.
When to use it:
Use this for quick visual comparison across competencies and flight phases. Helpful in briefings or evaluation sessions.
Example use:
Display an entire program’s strengths and weaknesses across CBTA dimensions at a glance.
Flight phase radar (filtered by user)
What it shows:
Same as above, filtered for one user.
When to use it:
Good for presenting individual performance trends in a debriefing context.
Example use:
Use the radar view to debrief CPT JAC’s performance development over the past month.
Performance tracker
What it shows:
Timeline of competency scores over time across a training program.
When to use it:
Use this to track development and progression in competency ratings. Identify improvement or decline across specific periods.
Example use:
Monitor whether “Aircraft Manual Control” performance improves consistently over the duration of the program.
Performance tracker (filtered by user)
What it shows:
Same as above, filtered by instructor or student.
When to use it:
Ideal for one-on-one performance reviews or instructor calibration.
Example use:
Track how one student’s “Situation Awareness” scores have changed flight by flight.
